Limiting Habit Spotlight: The “Perfectionist Habit”

If you have one or both sides of the “Perfectionist Habit,” you spend a lot of time analyzing and organizing and procrastinating until you are certain that everything is aligned for your success. Perfectionists fall into two categories. One type will start many things yest finish very few. This is because once started, they will only finish something if they can do it exactly right. So this type also has the “Incomplete Habit.” A flip side of the “Perfectionist Habit” is the version where they won’t event start on a project, goal, or anything if they can’t do it right. Often this might appear to be the “Procrastination Habit,” look a little closer and see that perfection is at the top of the spiral or cluster.

A Pattern Interrupt is straighforward and profound…

It is a method to dig down to the core of your Habit mechanism, where your Beliefs reside, and make a shift. Even if you keep Beliefs (and they can be awfully hard to change sometimes), it is within your power to rewrite the script of any Belief and replace almost any Belief-Link by actualizing a Pattern Interrupt. You have the bolt-cutters for your Habit-Chains and the power to link yourself to different Actions. pg. 65

Self Reflection: What do you see?

Let’s do a little exercise. First, make a fist and hold it out in front of you so that you are looking at your knuckles. Got it? Now, extend your index finger. Does that feel familiar? Ok, good. Now, turn your whole hand around 180 degrees so that your palm is facing up and bend at the wrist so that your finger makes a U-turn in the air. Congratulations! Like all great CEOs—and remember, whether you’re a teacher, a teenager, a parent, or a partner, we are all the CEOs of our lives—you have just located the center of all power in your life. Right there, where your finger is pointing right now: at yourself! You have also just performed the first step of every Pattern Interrupt you will ever do. pg 83

Not a temporary solution… a life changing shift.

You are not just putting band-aids on your life – you are going in deep to profoundly Shift the way you are in the world. You are debunking the myths inside your head, the “absolute truths” that are your old Habit-Stamped Beliefs, and you are giving them a reality check so that over time subtle changes start to manifest themselves. We never know where or how Shift will happen, at lest not exactly, yet the Shift is predictable. You can put faith in the fact that once you pull your habits into your conscious mind, focus on what you want in your life, and then put your attention on Pattern Interrupts, your unconscious mind will come along for the ride. pg 93
